The Sour Dal | O' Tenga Dali

This is a pulses preparation with elephant apple popular in northeastern areas.

It is also known as “Tenga Dali”(i.e sour pulses), taken by locals during the summers with rice.

Ingredients

½ Elephant Apple

100 gms Red Lentils/ Masur Dal

3-4 gloves of garlic

2-3 tbspn Oil

2-3 slited green chillies

½ tbspn turmeric powder

Salt as per taste

Method:

  1. In a cooker, add oil. Once heated, add garlic pods and fry gently

  2. Once garlic pods are fried, add crushed elephant apple.

  3. Add the pulses, salt, turmeric, green chillies & lightly fry.

  4. Add 2 cups of water & give 3-4 four whistles.

  5. Once cool, serve with rice

Note: Since Elephant apple is a sour fruit exclusively found in Northeast, You can add 1 lime juice instead of Elephant Apple to give sourness to the dal.
